27 August 2010 - Save Dave goes to the cinema

The Save Dave alcohol awareness campaign is expanding to target a new audience.  Two adverts will be on show at the Vue cinema in Gunwharf Quays from the 28th August, running for 6 months.

The two adverts highlight the things a ‘Dave’ could lose if his drinking gets out of control.  One image shows a groom alone on the top of a wedding cake, the other with a child holding a man’s hand.  Both adverts ask: Another Drink Dave?  What have you got to lose?

The adverts were developed after research with local drinkers, who had sought help for their alcohol problem.  These drinkers highlighted how important the relationship with their family was to them, and keeping their family together was one of their main reasons for seeking help.  Families were also important motivators in persuading drinkers to seek help.

The Save Dave campaign targets men aged over 35, who make up 60% of all alcohol related hospital admissions.  Recent data highlighted that Portsmouth has the highest rate of alcohol related hospital admissions in the South East, with 3832 people hospitalised in 2008 due to alcohol related illnesses.  Research suggests that alcohol related illnesses cost the NHS £8 million in Portsmouth each year.
