Portsmouth has the highest rate of alcohol-related hospital admissions in the South East. These admissions are for complaints, such as liver disease, which are caused by long-term heavy drinking, as well for treating people that have accidents whilst drunk. The figures show that 3500 Portsmouth residents we admitted to hospital last year due to their drinking, even more were treated at A&E. 60% of all these cases are men over 35 years old.To address this problem the Safer Portsmouth Partnership has launched a year-long campaign to 'Save Dave'. Everybody knows a 'Dave', that is someone that regularly drinks too much, and it is starting to effect their health, work or relationships.
We are holding various events over the course of the year, you will see us online, on Facebook, in the Portsmouth Evening News, in pharmacies, at the beer festivals and even down your local pub.
Do you know a 'Dave', indeed, are you a 'Dave'? If so, free, local help and advice is available. Visit call 023 9284 1753 or see your GP.
